Just Grand

I got a piano yesterday. It's a Story & Clark upright grand, and it appears to be from 1906, according to this site. :-)

I gave it a thorough vacuuming today (except for the back, which I can't reach. The piano doesn't roll well on my carpet). I have a feeling I destroyed ecosystems intact since its building.

Check out that damper system in the fourth photo! Why mute the strings when you can mute the hammers?

Oh, that's lovely. What kind of wood is it made of? How does it sound?

I think it's oak, though I'm not certain. It sounds pretty good--nice, rich tone. It's slightly out of tune but not too badly, especially since it probably hasn't been tuned for several decades.

The funky thing with the damper system is that you actually have to play the keyboard harder when the soft pedal is down, especially in the low notes. Otherwise they may not make any sound!
